This individual will be responsible for setting up the newly formed histology core at Spark Therapeutics. The candidate will use histology-based techniques and image analysis to support all the therapeutic areas.
Functions include all phases of tissue preparation, including fresh or in-process specimens (paraffin and frozen), finished product for release and explanted specimens.
Routine H&E (Hematoxylin & Eosin) staining, special stains technique (histochemistry), immunohistochemistry, microscopic, and image analysis are required.
Responsible for examining tissues upon receipt and applying understanding of gross anatomy and study purpose to determine and dissect appropriate representative samples for histology testing and Pathology analysis.
Specimen preparation that requires a complex and thorough understanding of tissue structure, as well as a basic understanding of chemistry and physics; and how tissues react under process conditions, including decalcification, rehydration, grossing, fixation, embedding, microtomy, routine staining, special stains (histochemistry), and immunohistochemistry.
This requires the ability to analyze tests results to discern if false results were induced through the production process, or through the histological testing process.
Develop and drive histology-based assays (through external and internal collaboration) including immunohistochemistry (IHC), immunofluorescence (IF) and in-situ hybridization (ISH)
Perform in-house qualitative or quantitative image analysis across different tissue staining platforms
Summarize findings (PowerPoint presentation, research reports etc.) and communicate to peers and management and wider Research and Clinical groups as projects evolve
This individual will also be responsible for maintenance, operation, qualification/validation of histology equipment, as well as training technicians and peers in histological sample handling, histochemical and immunohistochemical technique, imaging and analysis.
Support the Pre-Clinical Research Operations Lead in the day-to-day technical operation of the translational lab across all the therapeutic areas (Liver, CNS, Ocular, Discovery and Assay Development)
Performs routine assays across the different pipeline programs (e.g. ELISA, NAb assay, etc).
Implement new assays or optimize existing assays based on in-depth knowledge of laboratory techniques.
Participate in validation/qualification of bioanalytical assays such as immunoassays and cell-based assays.
Work with senior staff to ensure the availability of adequate laboratory materials and qualify new reagents, as needed.
Ensure optimal interactions across functions
Maintain accurate, timely and detailed records of work
Champion all safety aspects in the Translational Laboratories.
Hands-on Tissue processing, staining and image acquisition

Maintain laboratory safety procedures and compliance records
Prepare laboratory reagents/materials

PhD, DVM, or Masters degree in Biology, immunology, pathology, or related field highyl preferred.
Bachelors Degree Required.
Generally has 5 years of relevant experience
Experience in histology-based biomarker assay development and validation
Experience performing and troubleshooting singleplex and multiplex IHC, IF, and/or ISH assays
Experience in applying DNA/RNA profiling techniques in formalin-fixed tissue is preferred.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills as well as the ability to work effectively as part of a cross functional team
