The Histotechnology Laboratory assists the pathologists to diagnose diseases by preparing human tissue for routine and special procedures for microscopic examination. We are a 24-hour lab that process around 1300 to 1800 specimens a day. The tissue is thinly sliced and treated with dyes and chemicals to detect abnormalities and confirm a patient's diagnosis. With over 45 special stains and 250 IHC stains, the lab has many specific testing options at its disposal. The numerous second opinion cases are reviewed and cut by the Special Microtomy team. The Laboratory performs more than 100,000 tests per year including and complement quantitations, serving all of the affiliated clinics and hospitals of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.
