• Manages the daily technical operations of gross rooms in compliance with all regulatory requirements of College of American Pathologists (CAP), Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), and Pennsylvania Department of Health. • Ensures gross room staff checks the proper submission of pathology specimen. Maintains accession records necessary to confirm specimen identity and ensures correct fixation of the specimen received. • Collaborates with specimen submitting departments to ensure proper submission of specimens and documentation. • Trains residents, fellows, gross technician and PA I in frozen section preparation. • Ensures gross staff performs gross dissection and accurately dictates the gross description of the specimen received. • Evaluates gross staff’s dissection, dictation and provides mediation to those that do not meet the division standards. • Develops processes to improve patient safety within the gross room. • Ensures gross rooms (6 Founders and Perelman) are stocked and physically maintained in accordance with the established guidelines of the department and the needs of the residency program. • Ensures work allocation among gross staff is fair while maintaining an acceptable level of efficiency. • Ensures accurate, safe and timely processing of tissue from accessioning through submission to process lab to maintain patient safety and division’s expected TAT. • Works with Technical Operations Manager and other division supervisors to develop processes that improve patient safety, department efficiency and overall department TAT. • Develops a plan to cross train pathologists’ assistants in surgical pathology, Perelman lab and Medical Pathology Autopsy in accordance with the requirements of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and in accordance with pathology and safety department policies. • Ensures maintenance of skills learned in cross training by managing a work rotation schedule for pathologist’s assistants to ensure all gross dissection sites (6 Founders, Basement Maloney and Perelman Center) are adequately covered in times of emergency, high volume and staff turnover. • Works with Operations and Quality Managers to develop and maintain QA measures that ensure patient safety and laboratory efficiency. • Performs the assigned tasks and other duties. Functions in the capacity of a professional pathologist assistant in a busy academic medical center.
Baccalaureate degree in biological science plus a minimum of 2 years of on the job training supervised by a certified pathologist assistant or pathologist in specific area of surgical pathology gross room and/or medical pathology autopsy. Extensive knowledge of gross and surgical anatomy, dissection technique, autopsy, histologic processing methods and pathology nomenclature preferred. Minimal 5 years experience as a Pathologist Assistant in an appropriate setting is desirable.
Certification as Pathologist Assistant by the board of registry of the American Society for the Clinical Pathologists is preferred.
