| Job Description The Dementia Laboratory at Indiana University School of Medicine is looking for a histotechnician interested in working in a well-known research laboratory. The position offers a unique opportunity to work under the direction of Dr. Bernardino Ghetti, M.D., an internationally renowned neuropathologist and neuroscience researcher in Alzheimer Disease and familial dementias. Dr. Ghetti has assembled a brain library which contains over two thousand well-characterized brains from individuals affected by Alzheimer Disease, hereditary dementias, and many types of atypical dementias. The Dementia Laboratory is currently seeking a motivated histotechnician to help with the preparation of the histological sections, using a variety of histological and immunohistochemical stains. A senior technician will assist in teaching techniques and stains, as needed.
The Dementia Laboratory already supports research projects in 3 continents, including the United States, Europe, and Asia. The objective is to continue expanding the brain collection as an international research resource available to the neuroscience community. Job Summary Perform all necessary routine duties and procedures required for the processing of human and/or animal tissue specimens for diagnostic, teaching, and research purposes. Demonstrates knowledge of the scientific principles involved in the diagnostic procedures. Assist in researching and developing new procedures and techniques for diagnostic purposes. Primary job duties and responsibilities: Prepares tissue specimens for paraffin sectioning, frozen sections, or other appropriate methods for diagnostic, teaching, and research. Routine sectioning and cutting of tissue. Non-standard size sectioning and cutting of tissue and tissue blocks. Preparation of slides. Both routine and developmental histochemical stains. Prepares human and animal tissue for microtomy which involves fixation, dehydration, processing, decalcification, embedding, and machine maintenance. Receives and logs cases. Organizes and stores fixed and frozen tissue. Prepares and maintains reagents. Change or modify procedures to demonstrate specific cellular or tissue components of diagnostic importance. Maintains guidelines and standard operating procedures. Maintains regulatory compliance and quality control. Produces letters and documentation as well as other duties as assigned.
