Responsibilities - Complying with the laboratory's technical, administrative and safety policies and procedures.
- Participating in the laboratory's quality assurance plan, adhering to quality control and preventive maintenance policies and appropriately documenting these activities.
- Following the laboratory's policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within acceptable limits and documenting the problem and any corrective action.
- Troubleshooting and identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance and/or reporting of test results by initiating corrective action and using the defined electronic system to make the required management notification.
- Performing proficiency testing in the same manner as routine samples.
- Actively participating in successful and timely completion of training and competency assessment as outlined in the laboratory and departmental training programs.
- Where competency has not been approved by supervision, will work under the direct supervision of an employee competent on the task.
- Participating in continuing education according to accepted laboratory standards.
- Participates in departmental and cross-functional teams to resolve problems or implement projects.
- Can serve as a trainer on technical processes within the group.
Qualifications - Board Certified Histotechnician (HT) by a national certification agency, such as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), and
- Have a doctoral, master's, or bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology or
- Have an associate's degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology or
- Have the following education and training requirements:
- At least 90 semester hours including:
- 16 semester hours of chemistry including
- At least 6 semester hours of inorganic chemistry
- 16 semester hours of biology
- 3 semester hours of math
- Have lab training that includes any ONE of the following:
- Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, CAHEA or other HHS approved organization (this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above) or
- At least 3 months lab training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing or
- Have previously qualified or could have qualified as a MT on or before 02/28/1992 or
- On or before 04/24/1995, be a high school graduate or equivalent and have:
- Graduated from a MT program or
- Completed a US military MT training course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Lab technician)
- Until 09/01/1997:
- Have high school diploma or equivalent and
- Have training appropriate for the testing performed
Physical & Lifting Requirements - Lifting Requirements - medium work or exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pound of force frequently, and 10 pounds of force consistently.
- Physical Requirements - stationary positioning, moving, operating, ascending/descending, communicating, observing, reaching and repetitive motion.
- Use of equipment and tools necessary to perform essential job functions.
- Hazards and Atmospheric Conditions - exposure to fumes, dust, extreme temperatures, wet and/or humid, noise, vibration, mists or gases, mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards and radiant energy hazards. OSHA Category I - duties performed routinely requires exposure to blood, body fluid and tissue.
