JOB SUMMARY: Performs various tasks required for receiving, processing, and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by the Pathologist. Prepares microscopic tissue slides for diagnostic/research purposes; performs tissue stains to assist in diagnosis; handles specimen accessioning; maintains laboratory and equipment. Reviews quality control, performs operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of histology instruments and equipment. RESPONSIBILITIES: 1.1. Knowledge of the human anatomy 1.2. Knowledge of histology/cytology staining procedures 1.3. Knowledge of immunohistochemistry, instrumentation, special stains, immunofluorescence, microtomy, and Histology/cytology staining procedures 1.4. Ability to use a Cryostat 1.5. Ability to use computers (i.e. Microsoft Office, LIS systems)

Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:
Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
Qualifications: MINIMUM EDUCATION: Completion of training in an NCCLS-approved Histology Technician program required.
Bachelor�s or Associate's degree.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: 1 year experience as Histotechnician.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE:
State licensure where required.
REQUIRED COURSE(S) TRAINING:
PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS/REGISTRATION:
Histotechnologist certification through ASCP (or equivalent) preferred.
