A RECRUITMENT/RELOCATION INCENTIVE MAY BE AUTHORIZED TO HIGHLY QUALIFIED APPLICANTS The incumbent serves as the Histology and Surgical Grossing technologist in the Anatomic Pathology and Histopathology section of the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service, VA Medical Center, Manchester, NH. Assumes responsibility for surgical, cytology, and autopsy specimens after they are received in the laboratory, since many tissue specimens are difficult or impossible to replace. Ensures the identity of specimens is maintained throughout all stages of preparation. Performs all elements of gross examination and sectioning of all types of surgical pathology specimens and preparing specimens for analysis according to the specifications of the procedure. Under the administrative direction of the Supervisory Medical Technologist and /or the Laboratory Manager resolves all minor and major specimen problems. Performs technical preparation of both routine and special tissues including, but not limited to, needle and punch biopsies, bone marrow aspirations, most tissues and tissue biopsies, tissues from autopsies, brain, eye and bone (by fixing and decalcifying when necessary), dehydrating, clearing, infiltrating with paraffin (using manual and automated equipment), embedding in paraffin, cutting thin sections using microtomes, performing routine H&E and special staining, cover slipping and labeling the slides. Provides technical direction for the preparation and staining of bone marrow aspirate smears. Can identify all the various tissues in any step of preparation.
