A full-time position for a Microscopy Specialist is available at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology for our expanding Microscopy and Histology Core Facility. You will be working on high-impact projects investigating various aspects of the immune system. “Life Without Disease” is our mission and we want you to be a part of it! You will help to uncover the stunning beauty of the immune system and will take the front seat imaging it through our advanced microscopes.
The successful candidate will be part of a cutting-edge core facility that supports dozens of scientists through expert assistance with sample preparation, image acquisition, and data analysis. The Microscopy Specialist will independently perform routine histology procedures, regular microscope maintenance, and data management tasks and will also assist with specialized protocols. The ideal candidate is a recent graduate with some lab experience that is typically gained in a life science program, is self-motivated and consistently provides high-quality work, and is willing to learn quickly. Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The candidate will work under the supervision of the Director of the Microscopy and Histology Facility and will be guided by our Microscopy and Histology Staff. Approximately 50% of the time will be spent on histology sample preparation and 50% of the time in microscopy. An exceptional level of organization and good communication skills are a requisite to handle a high volume of samples. The candidate will assist in the development of histology assays, multiplexed staining techniques, in-situ RNA hybridization, and in-situ sequencing, among other techniques. Microscopy-related tasks include daily operation, shutdown, routine maintenance, and basic troubleshooting, as well as weekly testing, and monthly upkeep of the facility. The candidate will also provide assistance to facility users regarding instrument operation and data analysis (QuPath, Fiji, ZEN, Imaris).

B.S. in Biological Sciences or related degree preferred with 1-2 years experience in a laboratory environment. Dexterity and the ability to perform delicate tasks is essential (50% of the time). Ideally, you will have some experience with immunostaining techniques, the use of a variety of microscopes, along with high-throughput routine histology (FFPE and frozen sections), and image analysis.
