This position will perform histopathologic duties for the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System in the Pathology & Laboratory Service, including gross examination of surgical pathology specimens under the guidance of pathologists, submission of specimen for fixation, embedding, use of microtome to cut sections for histology slides, staining and coverslipping of slides. This position will also prepare and process cytologic specimens, frozen sections under the direction of pathologists, and assists in performance of autopsies. This position will process specimens for electron microscopy, immunofluorescence studies using glutaraldehyde fixative, and Michel's medium according to protocol. Muscle and nerve biopsy specimens will be processed with suitable packaging and material to existing vendors. Estrogen and progesterone studies will be processed per protocol. Duties include, but are not limited to: Maintains the laboratory facilities and equipment and controls supplies. Determines compliance with safety requirements, establishes inventory and equipment maintenance requirements and maintains appropriate inventories and maintenance schedules. Maintains laboratory stock and orders materials, as needed. Routinely calibrates and maintains laboratory instrumentation to minimize breakdown and delay of procedures. Records errors from other departments on pathology specimens per safety requirements. Maintains and controls laboratory records. Technician is responsible for some data analysis, including: arithmetic calculations, algebra, graphing of data using interactive computer programs, and preliminary statistical evaluations. Develops and maintains detailed records of all experimental or other protocols, and results are neatly kept and catalogued in appropriate format. Performs work in the examination procedures per standard operating procedures. Controls contaminated or potentially dangerous specimens in accordance with accreditation agency requirements. Prepares tissue for embedding, sectioning, staining and slides coverslipping. Gross specimen to include describing the tissue received from surgery or endoscopy and provide measurement, and place cassettes in tissue processor. Prepares instruments for autopsies, and assists pathologist as needed. Assists with sew up and clean up afterwards.
