A Pathologists’ Assistant is an intensively trained allied health professional who provides anatomic pathology services under the direction and supervision of a licensed, board certified or board eligible pathologist.
Responsible for receiving and accessioning anatomic pathology specimens and performing other routine technical procedure and general laboratory maintenance such as gross dissection and description of assigned surgical specimens.
Performs and/or assists pathologists in the accessioning, dissection, evisceration, description autopsy, and histologic sampling of a full range of anatomical specimens.
Supervises and trains entry level histotechs in pathology methodology and procedures, under guidance and within protocol parameters provided by the medical director.
Performs gross dissection consultations with dermatopathologists with understanding of the established protocol and procedural laboratory guidelines.
Coordinates the acquisition of tissue specimens used for research/ validation purposes.
Maintains digital files, ensuring a high standard of specimen photography when needed.
Participates in the accessioning and labeling of specimens, specimen storage and disposal, and the maintenance of reagents and laboratory equipment.
Cross match of patient requisition and reports.
May review, interpret, and present findings.
Understands utilization of gross macroscopic text.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Understands test principles, theory, maintenance, troubleshooting and operation of all instrumentation in assigned areas.
Has the ability to utilize critical thinking skills to perform above tasks and responsibilities
Bachelor's degree from an accredited Pathologist Assistant program or in a medical or scientific field; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
