General Statement of Duties: Performs technical duties associated with the dissection and preparation of tissues for histological processing
Physical Demands: Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time may occur. Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 30 lbs. Requires visual acuity and normal color perception.
Working Conditions: Exposure to toxic substances, communicable diseases, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a medical laboratory environment.
Job Responsibilities: (This list may not contain all of the duties assigned and can change)
*Performs tissue description, dissection, and blocking for optimal diagnostic evaluation of specimens
*Reviews specimens for completeness and accuracy, including site and patient identification
*Selects appropriate processing times and special procedures for tissues (ie. decalcification)
*Troubleshoots and resolves technical problems involving methodology, technique, and instrumentation utilization.
*Performs maintenance and quality control on instruments as applicable
*Monitors environmental conditions in the lab
*Maintains a safe working environment
*Monitors supply inventory and orders supplies
*Maintains patient confidentiality
*Actively supports and assists in implementation and monitoring of quality control and quality assurance policies
*Attends required meetings and participates in professional development activities
*Performs related work as required
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Knowledge of pathology laboratory procedures, equipment and standards.
- Knowledge of medical terminology related to the pathology laboratory.
- Knowledge of safety requirements to recognize hazardous conditions.
- Skill in performing all technical duties related to preparing histopathological slides.
- Skill in identifying and resolving technical problems.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Qualifications / Education:
*Minimum of Associates Degree in related science as approved by accrediting agency.
*Minimum of one year experience preferred.
*NYS Histotechnician License or higher license required.
