JOB SUMMARY:
Provide support for specified research projects; collect, assess, and communicate data/results. Assist in general laboratory operation and inventory. Training will be provided. Following the initial training period, it is expected that approximately 50% of effort will involve assisting with general mouse experiments, 40% working on an individual or group project depending upon the interest and ability of the applicant, and 10% lab upkeep. Work contributing to publications will result in co-authorship on those papers.

Vanderbilt's Section of Surgical Sciences combines many of our surgical departments at Vanderbilt into one framework with the commitment to providing the best in patient care. Our specialty teams of surgeons and researchers work closely with one another to discover and reveal the latest medical and surgical innovations, while teaching our residents the many facets of surgery. This collaboration of disciplines allows us to provide an array of conventional and unique surgical services to the entire mid-south region resulting in outstanding patient outcomes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Run experiments and assays, and record results
- Read and follow experimental protocols (May include animal handling, tissue culture, etc.)
- Compile and communicate results to supervisor
- Follow University safety protocols (may include use of combustibles, radioactivity, toxic material, and/or carcinogenics)
- Perform calculations involving molarity, % solutions, and serial dilutions
- Prepare and operate equipment in experimental procedures
- May include centrifuge, pH meter, spectrophotometer, autoclave, scintillation counter,
- electrophoresis unit, analytical balance, etc.
- Maintain and repair equipment according to manufacturer and university guidelines.
- Ensure Laboratory is prepared for experiments
- Maintain inventories,
- Maintain sterile conditions as required
- Prepare reagents
- Clean equipment.
- Special functions as described below.
CORE ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Function: Provide technical care and management of specialized animal programs such as breeding colonies, monitoring and treating mice. Animal husbandry includes such duties as follows:
- Set up breeding cages and monitor for pregnancies
- Separate females when pregnancy is detected
- Wean pups
Function: Monitor & maintain records of mouse colonies, including those for animal identification, animal census, animal health, specialized water and/or food
-Maintain accurate census data by indicating any incoming shipments or any deaths noted on the census sheet, or new pups.
-Record information pertinent to the experiment (e.g., weights, appearance during experimental procedures, adequacy of specialized food or water).
-Communicate any health concerns to supervisors.
Function: perform basic procedures on mice
- Removal under anesthesia of ear tissue for identification and genotyping
- Weigh mice
- IP injections
- Assist with mouse surgeries and dissections as needed.
Function: perform molecular biology and histology techniques, including:
- PCR
- Tissue embedding
- Tissue sectioning
- Staining slides with dyes or with antibodies
