The Histology Technician will perform technical and clerical duties related to the preparation of pathology specimens. They will prepare and stain surgical specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by the pathologist. This may include logging, batching, cutting, mounting and staining procedures. The Histology Technician will further assist and act as a resource person for the pathologists in the department.

Essential Job Outcomes
1. Meet department specific competencies. Proficient in the use of the current Laboratory Information System for data management.
2. Log surgical specimens and verifies completeness and accuracy of information.
3. Section tissues samples using good microtome techniques to produce acceptable quality slides.
4. Prepare chemical solutions and stains, label and store reagents according to procedure.
5. Stain tissue for routine and special stains. Staining is accurately performed and Quality Control results recorded. Stain quality is evaluated for acceptability prior to release of histology sections to the pathologist.
6. Maintains and operates laboratory equipment according to laboratory procedures. Instrument malfunctions are recognized and troubleshooting performed to ensure accurate operation. Instrument maintenance is performed and documented on a scheduled basis.
7. Complete daily Quality Assurance requirements thoroughly and accurately.
8. Provide timely distribution of pathology reports. Act as a resource person to assist in resolving issues and providing instruction to others. Ability to investigate and follow-up on requested tests and results for physicians and clients.
9. Ensure inventory of department supplies are maintained at proper levels.
10. Participate in department Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement program.
11. Promote a cooperative and efficient work environment. Create and maintains a safe environment for self and co-workers. Promote and participate in current department Gallup Impact plan.
12. Provide customer service effectively with the use of AIDET in communicating with all patients and visitors.
13. Adhere to CAP and other regulatory guidelines in all areas of the laboratory.
