ChristianaCare is recruiting for a Pathology Assistant to work part time at the Cecil County Campus. This position is Monday through Friday, 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Days and hours for this position may be flexible.
As the Pathology Assistant, you will perform necessary diagnostic testing and direct appropriate request of ancillary studies, within scope of practice and credentials.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Use of the EMR for gathering appropriate clinical information to optimize specimen handling and testing
- Utilize teaching/learning principles coupled with an expert clinical knowledge to promote and provide education and counseling to PAs, physicians, and laboratory staff
- Assure appropriate specimen accessioning, set-up, and triage
- Describe gross anatomic features, dissecting surgical specimens, and preparing tissue for histologic processing
- Obtain tissue samples for ancillary testing, including flow cytometry, culture, and cytogenetics
- Assure that surgical pathology and autopsy specimens are grossed in a timely fashion to meet required turn-around-time for reporting
- Assist with maintenance of equipment, provision of supplies, and cleanliness of the surgical pathology suite
- Assist pathologists with frozen sections, including immediate communication to the pathologist of pertinent gross findings
- Act as a liaison for other health professionals and committees external to pathology
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of best practice guidelines, quality and performance improvement protocols, algorithms, and research
- Provide excellent customer service and assist in efforts to improve specimen turn-around-time and patient satisfaction scores
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- M.S. degree from an accredited Pathology Assistant program
- Certification by the American Association of Pathologist Assistants
- Member of the American Association of Pathologist Assistants (AAPA)
- At least 1 year of experience as an Pathology Assistant in an acute care facility
