The laboratory supervisor is responsible for ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations, via comprehensive oversight and documentation of all activities impacting the histology laboratory. This team member is responsible for preparing tissue for routine microscopic analysis and special histochemical stains. The histotech is responsible for laboratory equipment routine maintenance and documentation, embedding and microtomy, slide staining and coverslipping, supply inventory and ordering, troubleshooting laboratory issues including processor issues, stain optimization, microtome adjustments and coverslipper maintenance. This team member is responsible for quality, safety and compliance programs and all required documentation to maintain inspection readiness of the histology laboratory. This individual will also maintain license certification and continuing education on an ongoing basis, and provide proof of these activities to the Chief Pathologist annually.
Required skills include a wide range of knowledge and experience in histology lab techniques. The individual must be detail oriented and display appropriate attention to detail to maintain a near-zero error rate, good problem-solving and analytic skills, excellent communication skills (both verbal and written), focused and well-organized, have the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and appropriately prioritize workflows, and to work independently with minimal supervision and as a team player. This team member must possess a positive attitude, even in high stress situations.
This team member will ensure effective operations and efficient production of pathology slides from pathology and cytology specimens, and must maintain a well-organized laboratory. Fluency and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Google Docs and internal laboratory systems is a must.
Additionally this team member must abide by all HIPAA, CLIA, COLA and OSHA guidelines and standards, and is responsible for ensuring annual training such as HIPAA, OSHA and Bloodborne Pathogen training for all practice personnel.
Educational requirements include at least a 2 year (Associates') Degree in a Laboratory Science with a minimum of 24 hours combined chemistry and biology credits, per CLIA Guidelines 493.1489 for high complexity testing personnel, and successful completion of a NACCLS accredited Histology Technician program. College transcript verification is required.
At least one year of work experience in a high complexity pathology laboratory is required for this position.
